Discover the story behind Caught Between Starlight and Sunrise, an International Photography Awards (IPA) Official Selection image by Burlington photographer Fyvie Studios.
Some photographs are planned. Others require patience, persistence, and a little faith that nature will reward those willing to wait.
Caught Between Starlight and Sunrise is one of those images.
Recently recognized as an Official Selection in the Professional category of the International Photography Awards (IPA), this photograph represents far more than a beautiful landscape. It captures one of the quietest, most fleeting moments in nature—the brief transition between night and day when the stars are still visible, yet the first light of sunrise begins to illuminate the mountains.

Chasing the Perfect Light
Landscape photography is often less about pressing the shutter and more about preparation.
Long before sunrise, I arrived in darkness, carefully setting up my equipment while relying only on starlight. Every detail mattered—from monitoring the weather and cloud cover to anticipating exactly where the first light would break across the landscape.
As the minutes passed, the sky slowly transformed. The stars remained overhead while warm light crept across the horizon, revealing the mountain peaks below. For only a few moments, both worlds existed together.
That fleeting balance became Caught Between Starlight and Sunrise.
Recognition from the International Photography Awards
Receiving an Official Selection in the Professional category of the International Photography Awards (IPA) is an incredible honour.
The IPA celebrates exceptional photography from professionals around the world, with work evaluated by an international jury of respected photographers, editors, curators and creative directors.
Knowing that this image stood out among entries from across the globe makes this recognition especially meaningful.
More Than a Landscape
Although Fyvie Studios is best known for award-winning family, equine, pet and branding photography in Burlington, Ontario, landscape photography remains one of my greatest creative passions.
Landscape photography teaches patience.
It teaches precision.
It teaches that the best photographs can't be rushed.
Those same values shape every portrait session I photograph. Whether I'm documenting a family, photographing a horse at sunrise, or creating artwork for a business, my approach is always the same: wait for authentic moments, pay attention to light, and never settle for "good enough."
Why This Image Matters
Photography has always been about preserving moments that cannot be recreated.
The exact arrangement of stars.
The changing colour of the sky.
The first light touching the mountains.
None of it will ever happen in quite the same way again.
That's what makes this image special.
It isn't simply a photograph of a landscape—it is a record of a moment that existed for only a few minutes before disappearing forever.
Looking Ahead
Being recognized by the International Photography Awards is an exciting milestone, but it's also motivation to continue pushing my creativity.
Whether I'm photographing the vast landscapes of the Canadian Rockies or documenting a family's story here in Burlington, my goal remains the same:
To create timeless artwork that will still feel meaningful decades from now.
Thank you to the International Photography Awards for selecting Caught Between Starlight and Sunrise, and to everyone who continues to support my work.
