There's something special about photographing a family when everyone is experiencing a completely different chapter of life.
One child navigating university, another making memories in high school, and the youngest just beginning the exciting adventure of preschool. Three very different stages, three very different schedules, and one family making time to come together.
For this beautiful family's fall photography session at The Estate Collection in Burlington, Ontario, we traded busy calendars and everyday routines for an afternoon of connection, laughter, and a little adventure through the fields.
And, of course, the family dog came along!
Family Photos Aren't Just for Families With Young Children
When we think about family photography, we often picture young children running through fields, toddlers being scooped into their parents' arms, and those early childhood milestones.
But what about everything that comes afterward?
The university years. The high school years. The last little one preparing to start school.
As children grow older, family photographs can become less frequent, even though the years seem to pass faster than ever.
With one child away at university, another balancing the demands of high school, and the youngest preparing for preschool, getting everyone together for updated family portraits becomes an occasion worth celebrating.
These are the years when family dynamics are changing, independence is growing, and opportunities to have everyone in the same place become increasingly precious.
You don't need a milestone to justify updating your family photographs. Sometimes, simply having everyone together is the milestone.
A Relaxed Fall Family Session at The Estate Collection in Burlington
One of my favourite things about photographing families at The Estate Collection is having the space to let moments unfold naturally.
Located on a beautiful private property in Burlington, Ontario, The Estate Collection offers rolling fields, mature trees, picturesque landscapes, and beautiful seasonal scenery.
Rather than spending the entire session asking everyone to stand perfectly still and smile at the camera, we explored the property together.
Walking through the tall grass, sharing a few laughs, capturing individual portraits, and making sure the family dog had an opportunity to steal the spotlight.
These are the moments I love documenting.
The interactions between siblings. The way a mother looks at her children. The laughter that happens between photographs. The little one who would much rather be exploring than posing.
Of course, we captured those traditional family portraits that deserve a place on the wall, too.
But some of my favourite images from this session came from the moments in between.

For this family, a combination of creams, soft blues, whites, and neutral tones created a cohesive look without everyone needing to wear matching outfits.
Their wardrobe complemented the landscape while allowing their personalities and connections to remain the focus.
And bringing the family dog? Always encouraged when the location and session arrangements allow!
After all, our four-legged family members are part of the story, too.
Your Family Will Never Be Quite Like This Again
One of the things I often remind families is that there's no perfect age or perfect time to book family photographs.
There will always be busy schedules, extracurricular activities, work commitments, and a reason to postpone.
But the years between preschool and university have a funny way of disappearing.
The little one who needs to be carried today will eventually be the teenager who towers over you. The high school student will graduate, and the university student will begin building a life of their own.
Every stage deserves to be documented.
For this family, their fall session wasn't about celebrating one particular milestone. It was about capturing all of them together, exactly as they are today.
Different ages. Different chapters. One family.
And that's a story worth preserving.
