A Golden Fall Goodbye | Horse & Rider Photography in Burlington

Some sessions are about capturing a beautiful evening. Others are about holding onto a chapter of your life before it changes.

For Olivia, this fall horse and rider session in Burlington was the latter.

Olivia had made the incredibly difficult decision to sell her heart horse after realizing she had unfortunately outgrown him. Anyone who has loved a horse knows that they become so much more than the animal waiting for you at the barn. They carry you through seasons of your life, teach you, challenge you, and somehow become woven into some of your most important memories.

Before this chapter came to an end, we wanted to give Olivia something tangible to remember it by.

A Golden Fall Evening in Burlington

We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful September evening for their session.

The soybean fields had turned that perfect golden fall colour, creating a soft, textured backdrop that seemed to glow as the sun dropped lower in the sky. Behind us were old rustic barns that gave the photographs a timeless, almost nostalgic feeling — exactly the kind of setting I love for horse and rider photography.

We spent the evening moving through the fields, giving Olivia time to simply be with her horse rather than worrying about constantly posing for the camera.

There were quiet moments together, little details, movement through the field and plenty of time for the two of them to interact naturally.

And then came the sunset.

The sky completely showed off for us, filling the horizon with gorgeous warm light and giving us the perfect ending to an already incredibly meaningful session.

Photographing the Relationship, Not Just the Horse

My favourite horse and rider sessions have never been about creating perfectly posed photographs from beginning to end.

They're about the relationship.

The way your horse looks for you. The familiar way your hand rests against their face. Walking together without thinking about it. The little expressions and interactions that probably feel completely ordinary right now — but may someday be the things you miss most.

Especially when a horse is being sold, retiring, moving barns or nearing the end of their life, these photographs can take on an entirely different meaning.

What feels like an ordinary evening at the barn today can become incredibly important years from now.

One Last Fall Together

There was something especially beautiful about photographing Olivia and her heart horse surrounded by the changing season.

Fall already carries that feeling of transition — warm golden fields, long shadows, cooler evenings and one season quietly giving way to the next. It felt like the perfect setting to document this chapter of their story.

Selling a heart horse doesn't erase everything that came before it.

The rides, the lessons, the frustrating days, the accomplishments, the quiet barn moments and the bond they built together all remain part of Olivia's story.

And now she'll have photographs that allow her to return to this particular evening: the golden soybean field, the rustic barns behind them, that incredible sunset — and, most importantly, the horse who meant so much to her.

These are the sessions that remind me why I love being an equine photographer in Burlington.

Because sometimes we're not just taking photographs.

We're preserving the last pages of a chapter before it turns.
