Burlington Baby Photographer | Family Photos Beyond the Newborn Stage

There is so much emphasis placed on newborn photos and first birthdays, but some of the sweetest stages of your baby’s first year happen somewhere in between.

The growing personality. The big smiles. The way they light up when they see their older sibling. The little expressions you see every day that somehow seem to change almost overnight.

As a Burlington baby photographer, I love documenting this stage as part of a relaxed family session — not necessarily to celebrate a particular milestone, but simply because your family looks like this right now.

This beautiful fall family session at Fyvie Studios’ private Estate Collection was the perfect example.

Baby Photography Doesn't Have to Be a Traditional Milestone Session

When we think about professional baby photography, we often think of newborn portraits, six-month milestone sessions or first birthday photos.

But you don't need a milestone on the calendar to have a reason to photograph your baby.

The months after the newborn stage bring so many changes. Babies become more expressive and interactive, their personalities begin to emerge, and the relationships between siblings start to become something entirely their own.

Instead of focusing on posed milestone portraits, I approach baby and family photography as a chance to document those relationships.

A cuddle with Mom.

Being scooped up by Dad.

A big brother wrapping his arms around his little sister.

And, of course, a few photographs of everyone together.

These are often the images that become more meaningful with time.

Including Older Siblings in Your Baby Photos

One of my favourite things about photographing a baby within a family session is including older siblings.

And it doesn't have to mean asking everyone to sit perfectly still and smile at the camera.

During this session, we moved around the Estate, played under the willow tree, cuddled on a blanket and gave big brother plenty of opportunities to simply be himself.

That might mean running through the grass one minute and snuggling beside his baby sister the next.

This is why my family sessions are intentionally relaxed and play-based, particularly when I'm photographing babies and young children.

Kids don't need to perform for the camera.

I would much rather create an environment where they can move, play and interact with their family. We will absolutely capture the photograph of everyone looking at the camera — but we'll also capture everything that happens in between.

What Is the Best Age for Baby Photos?

There really isn't one perfect age.

Every stage of your baby's first year gives you something different to document.

The newborn stage is tiny details, sleepy cuddles and those first days together. A few months later, babies begin making eye contact, smiling and interacting more with their parents. As they grow, sitting, crawling, standing and eventually those first steps completely change the photographs we can create.

That's why you don't necessarily need to wait until your baby's first birthday.

If you're looking through your camera roll and suddenly realizing how much your baby has changed, that's probably reason enough.

Outdoor Baby Photography in Burlington

Baby photography doesn't have to take place inside a studio.

For families who want something natural and relaxed, an outdoor family session gives us space to move and allows babies and young children to interact without constantly being repositioned.

This session took place at Fyvie Studios' private Estate Collection in Burlington, Ontario, surrounded by open fields, mature trees and one of my favourite features on the property — the willow tree.

In the fall, the evening light filters beautifully through the property, creating the warm, rich tones that have become such a recognizable part of my photography.

The Estate also allows us to create variety without requiring families with little ones to walk long distances between locations.

Family Photos With a Baby Don't Need to Be Perfect

If there's one thing I want parents of babies and young children to know before a family session, it's this:

Your children do not need to be perfectly behaved for us to create beautiful photographs.

Your toddler can run.

Your baby can need a break.

Someone can decide they are completely finished with sitting on the blanket.

That's okay.

Some of my favourite photographs happen immediately after we stop trying to make a photograph happen.

My approach to family photography in Burlington is centred around connection rather than perfection. I'll guide you when you need it, help with positioning and make sure we capture the important combinations, but there is plenty of room for your family to simply interact.

Because years from now, the goal isn't to remember how well everyone followed directions.

It's to remember how little they were.

Documenting the Stages Between the Milestones

Babies change incredibly quickly, but so does the rest of the family around them.

An older sibling becomes a big brother or sister. Parents settle into a new version of family life. Relationships change, personalities emerge and suddenly the baby you were just holding as a newborn is sitting, laughing and trying to keep up with everyone else.

Those ordinary stages deserve to be photographed too.
