Fall Family Photos With a Newborn: How to Keep Baby Cozy & Comfortable

Welcoming a new baby in the fall is pretty special—and you don't have to choose between newborn photographs and those beautiful outdoor family photos you've been imagining.

Fall can be an incredible time for a newborn family photography session in Burlington. The warm colours, soft evening light, cozy textures and changing landscape create a beautiful backdrop for documenting those first weeks together.

The key?

Keeping baby warm, fed and comfortable.

If you're planning outdoor fall family photos with a newborn, here are a few simple ways to prepare.

Dress Baby in Layers

When choosing outfits for fall family photos, think layers rather than one heavy piece.

A soft onesie underneath baby's outfit adds warmth without being visible, while cozy knits, cardigans, bonnets and blankets can add another layer when needed.

Layers also give us flexibility. Fall temperatures in Burlington can change quickly, particularly as we get closer to sunset.

And don't forget baby's feet! Warm socks or booties can make a big difference when the temperature starts to drop.

Bring Plenty of Warm Blankets

Bring more blankets than you think you'll need.

A beautiful neutral or textured blanket can actually become part of the photographs, while a heavier warm blanket can stay nearby for wrapping baby between shots.

We don't need your newborn uncovered throughout the session.

Some of the sweetest images can be created with baby completely bundled up in your arms.

Feed Baby Before the Session

Whenever possible, plan for a good feeding shortly before we begin.

A full newborn is often a much happier newborn.

That said, newborns don't care about our photography schedule! If baby needs another feeding during the session, we'll stop.

There is no rush.

A feeding break, diaper change or cuddle isn't interrupting your session—it's simply part of photographing life with a newborn.

Keep Baby Close

One of the best things about outdoor newborn family photography is that your baby can spend much of the session exactly where they are happiest:

In your arms.

We'll focus on cuddling, holding, tiny details and the connection between your newest family member and everyone who already loves them.

Not every newborn photograph needs to involve carefully positioning baby on their own.

Your arms are often the most beautiful place for them to be.

Dress the Rest of the Family in Layers Too

Comfort matters for everyone.

For fall family photos, layers photograph beautifully while also keeping parents and siblings comfortable as temperatures change.

Think cozy knits, cardigans, jackets, dresses with texture, boots and warm neutral or earthy tones.

Rather than having everyone perfectly match, choose colours and textures that complement one another.

Creams, warm browns, muted greens, camel, rust and other natural tones can work beautifully against a fall landscape.

Bring a Few Newborn Essentials

You don't need to pack your entire nursery, but having a small bag nearby can make your session much easier.

Consider bringing:

• Extra diapers and wipes

• An extra outfit

• Burp cloths

• Pacifier, if baby uses one

• Bottles or feeding supplies if needed

• Warm blankets

• An extra hat or bonnet

• Hand warmers for parents' pockets only—never placed against baby's skin

And if there's something that consistently settles your newborn at home, bring it along.

Don't Worry About Keeping Baby Awake

There's no need to adjust naps or try to keep your newborn awake before an outdoor family session.

If baby sleeps through the entire thing, wonderful.

If baby is wide awake and staring at everyone, wonderful.

If baby needs to be held by Mom for most of the session, that's wonderful too.

We're documenting your baby as they are right now rather than trying to force a particular newborn pose or expression.

Have a Backup Plan for Cold Weather

Fall weather in Ontario can change quickly.

A beautiful October evening can be surprisingly warm—or suddenly much colder than expected.

With a newborn, comfort and safety always come before getting the photograph.

If conditions aren't appropriate for such a tiny baby, we'll adjust accordingly. No photograph is worth keeping a newborn outside when they're uncomfortable or too cold.

Your Newborn Doesn't Need to Be Perfectly Posed

Outdoor newborn family photography is less about posing and more about connection.

Older siblings peeking into the blanket.

Tiny fingers wrapped around yours.

Your whole family cuddled together to stay warm.

These are the photographs that tell the story of what life looked like when your family had just changed forever.
