There is something about horses at Christmas that just works. 🎄

For this holiday horse and rider portrait session in Burlington, Ontario, we traded the traditional Christmas backdrop for something a little more dramatic — a beautiful white horse, classic western styling, a simple holiday wreath and a deep black background.

The result was a collection of timeless horse and rider portraits with just enough Christmas added in.

Christmas Horse Photography Without the Christmas Clutter

When I photograph holiday sessions, I don't want the Christmas setup to overpower the reason we're taking the photographs in the first place.

The horse.

The rider.

And the relationship between them.

For this Burlington equine photography session, we kept everything intentionally simple. A classic evergreen wreath with subtle gold details added the holiday element, while the black background allowed the beautiful white horse and rider to completely stand out.

We photographed a mixture of traditional horse and rider portraits, individual compositions and more relaxed poses, creating plenty of variety while maintaining the same cohesive look throughout the gallery.

And really — is there anything prettier than a grey horse against a black background?

A Western-Inspired Horse & Rider Session

The styling for this session couldn't have worked better.

Denim, a fitted black top, western boots, a statement belt buckle and cowboy hat created a look that felt completely natural alongside the horse while photographing beautifully against the darker background.

Rather than feeling like costumes created specifically for Christmas photographs, the wardrobe still felt authentic to the rider.

That's something I encourage with all of my horse and rider photography sessions.

Wear something that feels like you.

I can help with wardrobe choices and coordinating colours before your session, but ultimately your photographs should still look and feel like the person — and horse — you know.

Black Background Equine Portraits in Burlington

Black background portraits have become one of my favourite ways to photograph horses.

They remove virtually every distraction from the photograph and put all of the attention on the horse's expression, movement, shape and connection with their person.

And the best part?

We don't need a photography studio to create them.

These portraits can often be created right at your barn using the entrance to a barn, arena or another suitable covered space. With the right positioning and light, the surroundings disappear into darkness and create that beautiful fine-art black background effect.

For Christmas, adding just one understated seasonal element completely transforms the look.

It's festive without being overly themed — which means these photographs can still live on your walls throughout the year.
