Horse & Rider Photography in Burlington, Ontario: How to Prepare for Your Equine Photoshoot
There is something incredibly special about the relationship between a rider and their horse — and it's exactly why horse and rider sessions have become one of my favourite things to photograph.
Recently, I've been spending even more time photographing riders throughout Burlington and the surrounding Halton equestrian community, including Pony & Me sessions at Bayview Equestrian Centre. And one thing is always true: you don't need to know how to pose, have a perfectly behaved horse, or arrive looking like you stepped out of an equestrian magazine to create beautiful photographs.
You just need to show up with your horse. I'll take care of the rest.

What Happens During a Horse & Rider Photoshoot?
My equine photography sessions are relaxed and movement-focused. Rather than spending the entire session standing perfectly still and looking at the camera, we'll create a mixture of traditional portraits and the quieter, candid moments that actually tell your story.
Walking together. Scratching their favourite spot. Fixing a mane. Forehead-to-forehead moments. Laughing when your horse inevitably decides that right now is the perfect time to eat grass.
Those imperfect moments are often where my favourite photographs happen.
As a Burlington equine photographer, my goal is to create images that feel elevated enough to become artwork for your home, while still looking and feeling like you.

How to Prepare Your Horse
You don't need to completely transform your horse for photographs, but a little preparation makes an enormous difference.
Give your horse their usual thorough grooming before your session, paying particular attention to the face, eyes and nostrils. Clean and polish your bridle, scrub the bit and give the hooves some attention.
For many of my horse and rider portraits, a simple bridle is all we need.
And don't panic if your horse gets dirty five minutes later. They're horses. It happens.
What Should You Wear for Equine Photos?
Your clothing should complement your horse rather than compete with them.
Neutral and earthy colours photograph beautifully around barns, fields and natural landscapes. Think cream, camel, chocolate brown, denim, muted greens, warm taupes and soft natural tones.
You can also absolutely wear your riding attire. A polished equestrian look creates timeless portraits and feels authentic to this part of your life.
I generally recommend avoiding neon colours, highly reflective fabrics and sequins because they can reflect unwanted colour onto skin and your horse's coat.
And if you're photographing with a light-coloured horse, think twice before wearing head-to-toe black. Horse owners already know why.
You Don't Need a "Perfect" Horse
This may be the biggest misconception I hear about horse photography.
Your horse does not need to stand perfectly still.
I've photographed horses with plenty of personality, horses more interested in grass than me, and horses who have completely different plans for their photoshoot.
That's okay.
I'll work around them.
Some of the most beautiful images happen between the poses, and experience around horses makes a tremendous difference when photographing them. We give them time, work safely and let their personality be part of the session.
Pony & Me Sessions at Bayview Equestrian Centre
My recent Pony & Me sessions at Bayview Equestrian Centre were such a fun opportunity to photograph riders with the horses and ponies that have become such an important part of their lives.
We photographed around the pond and grounds, creating everything from polished equestrian portraits to relaxed images that simply captured the connection between horse and rider.
These shorter equine photography sessions are particularly special for young riders. Horses and ponies become such enormous pieces of their childhood, yet families often have hundreds of phone pictures and very few professional photographs of them together.
Years from now, those photographs become priceless.
Your Horse Is Part of Your Story
One of the reasons I love equine photography so much is because these aren't just horse pictures.
They're photographs of a relationship.
Whether you've owned your horse for fifteen years, you're celebrating your first season together, your child has fallen completely in love with their favourite lesson pony, or you're simply realizing that you don't have enough photographs with the horse whose camera roll is already taking over your phone — that's reason enough to document it.
And don't wait for the perfect season, perfect outfit or perfect moment.
Photograph the relationship you have right now.
