How to Prepare Your Kids for a Fall Family Photography Session

Fall is one of my favourite times of year for family photography in Burlington. The warm colours, tall grasses, cozy layers and beautiful evening light create the perfect backdrop—but if you’re a parent, there’s probably another thought running through your mind:
“What if my kids don’t cooperate?”
Here’s the good news: they don’t need to.
Some of my favourite family photographs happen when kids are running, exploring, laughing, cuddling their parents or doing something completely unexpected. A successful family photography session isn’t about getting children to behave perfectly for the camera. It’s about creating an environment where your family can relax enough for genuine moments to happen.
If you have a fall family photography session coming up, here are a few things you can do to make the experience easier for everyone.
1. Don’t Make the Session Sound Like a Chore
Instead of telling your kids, “We have pictures tonight, so you need to behave,” try treating your session like a little family outing.
Tell them you’re going somewhere beautiful to explore, play and spend some time together.
When kids arrive expecting to have fun rather than perform for a camera, they tend to relax much faster—and that makes a huge difference in the photographs.
2. Skip the Pressure to Smile
You don’t need to practice smiles before your session or remind your children to “say cheese.”
In fact, please don’t!
My approach to family photography is much more focused on creating moments than forcing expressions. I’ll give your family little prompts, encourage movement and let your children’s personalities come through naturally.
Of course, we’ll still capture those beautiful photographs of everyone together, but we don’t need to manufacture every smile to get them.
3. Make Sure Everyone Is Fed
Hungry kids and golden-hour photography are not always the best combination.
Because fall family sessions often take place later in the afternoon or around sunset, try to make sure your children have eaten before arriving.
A small, non-messy snack beforehand can also be a lifesaver. Just avoid anything likely to leave brightly coloured crumbs, chocolate or sticky fingers on carefully planned outfits!
4. Choose Clothes They Can Actually Move In
Your outfits absolutely contribute to the overall look of your gallery, but children should still be comfortable enough to move.
During a session, we might walk through tall grass, sit together, cuddle, run, twirl or explore.
If your child is uncomfortable, itchy, freezing or constantly being told not to get their clothing dirty, it becomes much harder for them to relax.
For fall family photos, I love layers, texture and warm neutral or earthy tones. Most importantly, choose pieces that still feel like your family.
5. Let Me Take the Lead
This might be the biggest one.
If your child wanders away, makes a silly face or suddenly decides they have absolutely no interest in looking at the camera, you don't need to panic.
I've got them.
Sometimes the quickest way to get a child back into the session is actually to give them a little space rather than having several adults asking them to smile or look at the camera.
You can focus on being present with your family while I focus on what is happening through my lens.

6. Embrace a Little Chaos
Your family session isn't supposed to look like five perfectly positioned people standing completely still.
Kids move.
They laugh too loudly. They make ridiculous faces. They run away. They hug you unexpectedly. They pick up sticks. They whisper things to their siblings. Sometimes they decide that right now is the perfect moment to show me how fast they can run.
And somewhere inside all of that are the photographs that feel like you.
Those little interactions often tell far more about this season of your family than a perfectly posed photograph ever could.
7. Don't Stress About the Weather
Fall weather in Burlington can be unpredictable, and overcast skies aren't necessarily bad news for your photographs.
Soft cloud cover can create beautiful, flattering light and bring out the rich greens, browns and autumn tones that work so well with my photography style.
If the weather truly isn't suitable for your session, we'll deal with that. Otherwise, don't feel like you need a perfectly sunny evening to create beautiful images.
8. Remember Why You're Doing This
It's easy to become focused on whether everyone is looking at the camera, whether your toddler's hair stayed in place or whether your older child smiled enough.
But those aren't usually the things you'll notice years from now.
You'll notice how small your child looked beside you.
The missing teeth.
The way your youngest still reached for your hand.
The way your children laughed together.
The way everyone fit into your arms.
Family photographs preserve a version of your family that won't exist exactly this way again.
My fall family photography sessions are designed to feel relaxed, natural and full of movement. Rather than expecting children to perform for the camera, I create space for families to interact, explore and simply be together.
Fyvie Studios offers fall family photography in Burlington and surrounding areas, including sessions at my exclusive Estate Collection location in Burlington. With tall grasses, a pond, mature trees, a beautiful willow and changing fall scenery, the property gives us plenty of room to create photographs that feel natural, warm and completely unique to your family.
So if you're worried that your kids won't sit still for family photos?
Perfect. They don't have to.
Let them run. Let them laugh. Let them be themselves.
I'll take care of the rest.
